| 09.07.2011 | Tom Owens jubilant champion of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS after four stage victories / Anna Frost triumphant among Women |
|---|
Tom Owens has claimed overall victory in the premiere of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS, dashing through the finish banner in Samnaun, Switzerland, in the hair-raising time of 4:47:14.3 hours. Today's ultimate high-alpine stage covered a distance of 45,30 kilometers with no less than 2,909 meters of elevation gain between Landeck (AUT) and the well-known Swiss ski resort. After 157.4 km and 9,899 m of vertical ascent, Owens ended up with a cumulative time of just 16:43:54.3 hours for the trails between Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) and Samnaun (SUI). Second on today's stage, but also in the overall ranking was the amazing Philipp Reiter (GER, 5:04:39.2, 17:26:13.8) who, in turn, was once again trailed by the ever-eminent Matthias Dippacher (GER, 5:10:19.5; 17:50:33.1). These three athletes as well as the victor of the Master Men title, Dr. Thomas Miksch (17:54:59.6), were the only racers to stay below the coveted 18 hour threshold.

Taking the high road to wrap up the SALOMON 4 TRAILS (45.30 km, 2.909 m ASC)
The final day of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS arguably represents the most challenging stage totaling more than 45 kilometers in horizontal distance and packing almost 3,000 meters in elevation gain on top of that.
As if this feat wasn't enough, the racers also reach their highest elevation: the Ochsenscharte at 2,787m. The stage makes up for this physical challenge by offering up easier trails than on the two previous days – relatively speaking! The racers stay mostly above treeline, which should make for a picture-perfect finish to a grueling but rewarding race.
| 08.07.2011 | Tom Owens impossible to beat / Gaby Steigmeier withdraws / Anton Philipp claims Master podium / Anna Frost rules Women |
|---|
The dominant racer leading the pack of 160 racers in the 1st SALOMON 4 TRAILS seems unstoppable on his mission to claim overall race victory en route to Switzerland. Scotland's Tom Owens took 3:18:45.9 hours to dash across the imposing Venet Range between Imst and Landeck, Austria – a course no less than 31,10 km long with a cumulative vertical ascent of 1,854 m.
Owens extended his overall lead on second-placing Philipp Reiter (GER, 3:22:03.5) to 25 minutes and, thus, could easily afford to dilly-dally some on the tomorrow's final stage without threatening his chance for overall victory. Matthias Dippacher (GER) arrived in Landeck in third position today with a time of 3:25:00.4 hours, which also puts him within reach of an overall podium position in the Men's category.

Peak-bagging in three parts (31.10 km, 1.854 m ASC)
The order of the day for the third stage from Imst to Landeck can be summarized as – stay high once you get up above treeline and bag all the peaks along the way – a panoramic smorgasbord of some of the best Tyrolean landscapes. The stage cavorts with alpine pastures and cool forests before ending up on a delightful alpine ridgeline that undulates between the Kreuzjoch (2,464m), the Wannejöchl (2,497m) and the Glanderspitze (2,512m).
Snaking its way up, the trails offer breath-taking vistas of the glaciated Ötztaler Ranges to the South and the lush Lechtaler Alps to the North. The stage wraps up with a smooth forest trail and the longest descent of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS down to the finish line near medieval Landeck Castle.
| 07.07.2011 | Tom Owens bags second stage victory extending his lead / Thomas Miksch demonstrates true 'Master' skills / Gaby Steigmeier owns trails to date |
|---|
Tom Owens lived up to form once again arriving first at the finish in Imst, Austria, on the end of Stage Two of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS. The Scotsman, running for Team Salomon International, must have grown wings to cover today's 2,663 meters of elevation gain over more than marathon distance in a mere 4:46:00.6 hours. That time secured him a lead of more than 18 minutes over second-placing Philipp Reiter (5:04:39.7 hours), Germany's trail-running 'wonder kid'. Third to cross the finish line was Matthias Dippacher (5:07:47.2, GER), who chose to arrive side-by-side with Dr. Thomas Miksch (GER), the dominant runner in the Master Men category.

Sziols, one of our SALOMON 4 TRAILS partners, came up with a nice surprise for three runners. Those racers, who will finish today's second stage from Ehrwald to Imst as 50th, 100th and 150th, respectively, will get some running glasses for free.
In addition, Orthomol agreed on handling out some food supplement to everyone in the finish area. All participants will receive Orthomol Sport for a better recovering.
We think that's a nice idea which we appreciate.

"Sounds of Music" scenery but also the litmus test for racers' joints (42.2 km, 2,663 m Asc)
Day two starts with a traverse of the rugged Mieminger Mountains via the Grünsteinscharte (2,263m) - a truly alpine setting and scenic highlight of the 2011 SALOMON 4 TRAILS. The ensuing, relentless descent (totaling 1,200 m) underscores the demands of trail running in the Alps and proves a true test of racers’ joints and brawns.
The stage being far from over, Part Two of today’s leg starts off with another grueling ascent to the alpine pastures of the Haiminger Alm. High above the Inn Valley, the racers continue up along the spine of Tschirgant Mountain with landmark views all around. The price to be paid for this scenic foray is a continuous descent into Imst over 1,400 m. The trail uses a short section of Tyrol’s renowned Eagle Trail, a long-distance hiking track spanning the entire length of the province.
| 06.07.2011 | Scottish Tom Owens living up to repute – victorious on the inaugural stage / Dr. Thomas Miksch (GER) dominates all Masters / Gaby Steigmeier fastest woman on the trail |
|---|
Tom Owens claimed a deserved victory on the first of four stages in the 1st SALOMON 4 TRAILS race, a new multi-day trail running competition. It took the 29-year–old Scot no more than 3:51:53.3 hours to cover the distance of 36.2 km and a vertical gain of 2,473 m between Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER) and Ehrwald (AUT). His closest competitor, Philipp Reiter (GER) arrived at the finish line with a mere three minute delay (3:54:51.4).
Spanish racer Santiago Obaya Fernandez claimed third place on the Men’s podium with his formidable time of 4:03:30.2 hours. The Spaniard’s victory was tarnished only by being beaten to the finish by the fastest racer in the Masters category (racers 40+ years of age), Dr. Thomas Miksch (GER) whose time of 4:02:34.7 advanced him to third place in the overall ranking of 160 racers.

|---|
Up and down as warm-up
The first day of the SALOMOPN 4 TRAILS will help all participants to realize what they are up to: running through alpine scenery as the opening stage isn't miserly with it at all. There are not only a total of six up and downs but also the most beautiful hiking paths and trails of the Zugspitz massif.
However, before it's time for some trails, the track from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Ehrwald leads the field from the start on forest roads into the Rein Valley and further on to the Garmischer Haus and the Laubhütte. Thereafter, a very narrow path meanders up to the Kreuzeck, always right beneath the Garmisch-Partenkirchen's landmark, the 2,600 meter high Alpspitze. After the Kreuzeck, a very steep zig zag route brings everyone down to Hammersbach.
On their way to the German-Austrian border and further on to the lower terminus of the Zugspitz cable car, the racers pass the picturesque Eibsee and have to climb a total of 800 meters in elevation before descending down to the finish in Ehrwald.

It is worth to motivate your friends and clubmates to get together for a start at the SALOMON 4 TRAILS. Apart from the team spirit of a stage run, the fastest teams have the chance to win something at the SALOMON 4 TRAILS. The fastest three team runners will range in the overall as well as the daily results. At the end of the four stages in the town of Samnaun, there be great prizes to win apart from glory and victory. These will be handed out at a impressive award ceremony. You can never be sure what will happen on four stages to the three team mates, so it is recommended that you bring some additional runners. That way you never have to feel alone during your run and you can carry on the race in this special team spirit.
At the end there will be happy teams at a great finisher party of SALOMON 4 TRAILS. Get motivated, because "together you are strong"!
| 12.05.2011 | Tyrol new partner at the SALOMON 4 TRAILS |
|---|
With Tyrol, the SALOMON 4 TRAILS have found a new partner who is looking forward to meeting the Trail and Mountain runners. Charming landscapes as well as friendly and kind people are a trademark of Tyrol. Participants of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS will see Tyrol's diverse and beautiful nature for themselves on their way from Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Ehrwald, Imst and Landeck to Samnaun.
Aside from Tyrol's high-class destinations St. Anton and Kitzbühel, the wild and romantic valleys of the Pitz or Ötztal or the national reserves Großglockner / Großvenediger in the idyllic Eastern Tyrol are its landmarks. Whether it's for an excursion, a short trip or a prolonged stay, Tyrol has a lot to offer. For participants and their company there will hardly be enough time to check out Tyrol's benefits personally. But all those who are still looking for a suitable place to relax and rest after the strains of the race should definitely take a closer look at Tyrol.
| 19.04.2011 | Relax before the exertion |
|---|
Relaxation is definitely something participants of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS will need before the start because they will certainly have to give it all they got on this run of 163 km and 10,800 m of altitude difference. The Alpspitz Wave Pool in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the start venue of the event, offers a great opportunity to relax before the race and to do something good for your muscles.
Located in the middle of a beautiful mountain landscape, a sauna area of 1000 square meters and indoor and outdoor pools of 2200 square meters invite you for a relaxing stay. All participants of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS who spend the night before the start on July 6 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen are welcome to spend a relaxing time free of charge at the Alspitz Wave Pool ahead of the athletic challenge. With a Resort Card (Kurkarte) that overnight guests receive, admittance to the Alpspitz Wave Pool is automatically free of charge. A worthwhile service of the city of Garmisch-Partenkirchen that no one should miss out on before the next four strenuous stages of the run begin.

As of now, Garmin, the global market leader in mobile navigation technologies and a specialist for GPS sports computers, is an official partner of the SALOMON 4 TRAILS and extending its commitment with PLAN B event company GmbH.
Especially in high alpine territory, sudden changes in the weather such as fog, heavy rain, snow and wind gusts can disguise the markings and signposts along the track. "The SALOMON 4 TRAILS is an Alps crossing for individual runners, everybody is on his own there. Navigation equipment makes it easier and safer for participants to stay on the defined route. We are excited that, with Garmin, we have an absolutely reliable partner in the department of navigation systems by our side. That is especially true for an event like this," says SALOMON 4 TRAILS project manager Anika Stephan. Garmin navigation devices are easy to use and absolutely reliable even in critical situations. There is a reason why top athletes put their trust in products by Garmin.
Tom Mühlmann, communications marketing manager of Garmin Germany and himself an avid endurance athlete, adds: "Our GPS sports computers are easy-to-use and absolutely reliable. So it's not much of a surprise that pros as well as amateur athletes are replacing their old pulse watches with a modern device featuring GPS. The additional benefits are immense - especially on extreme running events such as the SALOMON 4 TRAILS."
Of course, Garmin will also present itself at the start in Garmisch-Partenkirchen on-site of the EXPO area and offer advice and practical support to SALOMON 4 TRAILS participants. But also in Ehrwald Garmin will be available for questions and offer their competent services.
